FAQs

Scroll down for a list of common questions and policy information. Please read prior to booking, let’s talk soon and create your dream experience!

Why choose a hike with me? I’ve spent nearly my whole life living on the Eastport Peninsula. I’m knowledgeable of the area, history, and trail conditions, and will provide stories along the way with incredible views courtesy of Newfoundland! I can create a special experience just for you!

When is payment due? A deposit of 50% is due at time of booking, full balance due the day of hike. See how to pay, and cancellation policy below in case you can’t make your booking. No gratuity is included but are welcome.

How do I pay? I take EMT (email transfer to hansfordhiking@gmail.com). If you are an international guest, please mention that at booking in case international banking is a problem.

What happens if I need to cancel? A full refund will be given if cancellation is received more than 48 hours ahead. Less than 48 hours is non-refundable. Scroll down for information regarding weather.

What happens if the weather is bad? All hikes are weather dependent, I’ll make a decision about the weather the day of our hike and will communicate with clients. Please keep in mind that the term ‘inclement weather’ was made for Newfoundland - I try to go ‘rain or shine’! For the Coastal Ridge Trail: I will reschedule these hikes on hot, sunny days as dehydration and sun exposure is a concern, we will chat about that when you inquire.

Can I bring my dog? Dogs are welcome on group hikes if your party is the whole group, for mixed groups no pets are allowed. Please inquire at booking.

Are the photos on your website for real, they’re beautiful! Yes, all images on my site are of the Eastport Peninsula where your adventure will be. Hiking in Newfoundland is truly spectacular! Join my Facebook page for more photos from the area and my daily hikes.

Where can I learn more about the area and where to stay while visiting? There are a number of informative Facebook pages in the area that I recommend you follow: my hiking page, Damnable Trail, the Road to the Beaches (tourism association, they have an accommodator’s call line and events calendar).

I’m an avid walker but usually avoid hills, how will I do on a hike? Let’s talk about your circumstance and see if it’s a personal choice or if you have mobility issues. For those looking to avoid hills or uneven terrain, I recommend one of the walks vs a hike.

What do I wear? Visit the ‘Packing’ section for more info. I advise to always wear pants/leggings instead of shorts even on warm days. We’ll be hiking through brush and potentially getting wet (except on the easier walks), it will save your legs from bugs, scratches, and mud! Long sleeves are also recommended to avoid insect bites and sunburns. Remember proper footwear: sandals or open toed shoes are not recommended.

What do you supply? I supply the knowledge and expertise, beyond that each hiker needs to be prepared with their own snacks, water, clothing, boots, medication, etc. Unless requested and agreed on ahead of time. If you need bug spray, bring that too, Newfoundland has every manner of winged insect but on a windy day that won’t be an issue - so a little wind is actually a good thing!

What about bears? I’ve been hiking the trails for decades and it is very rare to encounter a bear (we only have black bears, not brown or grizzly). Firearms and bear spray are not permitted on my hikes, if you have concerns please let me know when you book.

Can we camp?Ask me about that in your inquiry, the Coastal Ridge Trail and Wild Cove does offer some free overnight camping options.

What if I don’t have a good time? as long as you’re prepared and know your physical limits, you’ll have a good time! The company alone will be worth it. Don’t forget the stories and views make for a wonderful trip no matter what!
